The girls and boys got off to an electric start at their first meet of the season. Their meet against Woodland Hills, Oakland Catholic, and Central Catholic saw a number of athletes make their varsity debut and set new personal bests.

The sprinters lead the way for the Penn Hills squad with nearly the entire girl’s team taking part in the 400 meter dash. Notable performances came from sophomore Mackenzie McIntrye who placed second in both the 100 and 200.  Mackenzie’s second place 100 meter performance was only thousandths of a second behind Woodland Hills’ Madison Sheffey’s 13.05 time. In the girl’s 400, Penn Hills took home second through fifth place with team captain Mylah Faulk leading the way. Mylah crossed the line in 1:01.98. Teammates Janaya Coleman (1:02.45), Maliah Powell (1:02.91), and Jadyn Golden (1:05.39) rounded out the stellar team performance. The team’s sole distance runner held her own in the girl’s 800. Freshman Amanda Heide set a new outdoor best 800 time. The girl’s team took home top positions in two out of the three relays, winning both the 4x100 and 4x400. In the field events, McKayla Talkish, Caidyn Thomas, Mackenna Carricato, and Cara Crawford registered top five finishes for Penn Hills. Cara, Caidyn, and Mackenna were in the top five in the discus. Cara came back in the shot put to take fourth with McKayla taking third.

The hurdlers lead the way for the guys in Monday afternoon’s meet. Junior Achan Green set the 27th fastest time in the state in the 110 hurdles running a 15.76. He doubled back in the 300 meter hurdles winning the event and crossing just 2-tenths ahead of teammate Paris Bey. Both athletes were over 5 seconds faster than the third place finisher. Achan and Paris, along with Cameron Thomas and Julian Dugger closed the meet by winning an exciting 4x400. Paris anchored the team to a 1-tenth of a second victory over the Woodland Hills’ team. In the field events, Julian Dugger won the long jump by nearly a foot. Donovan Burnett took home a 5th place finish in the shot put.
